The map, as drawn by community members, preserves many communities of interest in Precinct One,

including historic Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Sunnyside, South Union, Kashmere Gardens, Trinity Gardens, and Acres Homes.

The Unity Map also preserves Precinct Two as containing most areas in eastern Harris County,

including Channelview, Pasadena, Galena Park, Baytown, and Deer Park,

and where many face pollution because of toxic release facilities (marked by black circles on this map, data from Air Alliance Houston).

We also propose that Precinct Two encompass Aldine completely,

which under the current map is split between Precinct Four, Precinct One, and Precinct Two.

This proposal ensures that many communities of interest are contained entirely within Precinct Three,

including communities such as Asiatown, Alief, Sharpstown, Gulfton, Hillcroft, and Spring Branch.

Throughout our community mapping process, we listened to regular people about the issues that are important to them. We designed the Commissioner precincts to group communities that share common issues:

Poverty

Rate of poverty (Census 2010)

Immigrant rights

Rate of foreign-born residents (Census 2010)

Infrastructure and flooding

Harris County Flood Plain

Housing stability

Rate of renters (Census 2010)

Access to healthcare

Rate of people without health insurance (Census 2010)
